Netflix & Hulu Go recommendations for 20somethings

10 TV series to stream - Hulu and Netflix recommendations - here's what to watch next (reality tv, true crime, comedies) // ew & pt

I abandon a lot of TV shows and I don’t watch TV super often except when I’m on the bus at night or when I carve out some time after work or on Sundays. And I hate wasting this time wondering what to watch! It’s taken me a while to dig through some crappy pilot episodes to find some quality series, at least in my opinion. That being said, when I actually watch a series in its entirety, it usually is a pretty good (or good-bad) show.

Since I can go on forever, I’m going to try to really narrow down my “what to watch” list. Here are some TV and docu-series recommendations I have for you based on what I’ve watched lately.  And as much as I love It’s Always Sunny and Parks & Rec, I’m also going to try to hopefully suggest shows you might not have heard about.

Here are some Hulu and Netflix recommendations for when you’re trying to figure out what to stream next!

Netflix

Atypical

Length: 2 seasons

Type: TV series  – dramedy

Why to watch: This show was so pleasant to watch! It follows Sam, an autistic teen, and his family. There’s family drama, candid struggles about how the family functions, and some pretty funny jokes. The show felt quite eye-opening and it was just really pleasant to watch. Not ashamed to admit the finale made me cry a few times.

You

Length: 1 season (season two is currently being filmed)

Type: TV series – thriller

Why to watch: I watched this all in literally one day. The suspense! The dark humor! The horror! Penn Badgley looking handsome even though his character is a monster! It’s all about an obsessive stalker who “falls in love” in a bookstore. Seriously, this is my new favorite show and it had me on the edge of my seat. Plus, it’s set in good ‘ol NYC.

Derry Girls

Length: 1 very short season (six episodes)

Type: TV series- comedy

Why to watch: This show truly cracked me up. It follows high school girls during wartime in Ireland (there’s a lot more to it but I don’t really explain shows well) and it’s a true joy to watch. Admittedly, the thick accents were tough for me to understand at times so I watched this one with subtitles, but this show was one I wasn’t expecting to love because I usually don’t enjoy wartime shows or series set in the past but I loved it. It seriously cracked me up.

I Am A Killer

Length: 1 season

Type: Docu-series – true crime

Why to watch: These in-depth interviews and not-cringey re-enactments are so interesting! Every episode profiles someone different and each person interviewed is on death row. The episodes have had me hooked.

Skin Wars

Length: 3 seasons (and a spin-off)

Type: TV series – reality show competition

Why to watch: It’s a body-painting competition show! It’s seriously impressive to watch. Every season had me hooked. It’s really impressive to see how people can use body paint to make amazing creations.

Yummy Mummies

Length: 1 season

Type: Australian TV series- reality

Why to watch: You don’t have to pay much attention to this one. It follows the lives of wealthy, pregnant Australian moms and moms-to-be and it’s just really interesting and great for getting in your reality TV fix. Think Real Housewives but make it boujee.

The Haunting of Hill House

Length: 1 season

Type: TV series – horror

Why to watch: If you love dark, mystery thrillers you’re going to LOVE this. I don’t recommend watching alone! This show made me jump so many times and I was truly hooked until the very last episode. I won’t spoil it but the ending was a HUGE letdown. That being said, it’s SO worth watching and it’s so easy to get invested in. It follows a family through flashbacks from childhood and flashes to the present as a family goes back through the death of their mother and growing up in a creepy, haunted home. It’s pretty creepy.

Hulu

Desperate Housewives

Length: 8 very long seasons

Type: TV series – dramedy

Why to watch: Yes, I’m late to the game. This show took me over a year to finish, but I found myself hooked on the wildly unbelievable yet interesting plots. It’s a great show to half-watch or watch passively. You don’t need to pay a ton of attention and it’s just quite calming and it’s exactly what to watch if you want some good background noise.

Broad City

Length: 4 seasons

Type: TV series – comedy

Why to watch: This TV series set in NYC follows two friends who are…living their lives. Like I said, not good at describing shows. The show is really funny but I will say that the last season wasn’t super great. The first two seasons were definitely the best and I totally recommend giving this series a chance.

Nathan for You

Length: 4 seasons

Type: TV series – reality/comedy

Why to watch: This is my favorite reality comedy show. It is SO funny. It’s basically a guy who goes to try to “help businesses” with terrible, strange ideas. But no one can tell he’s joking (sometimes not even us, the viewers) and the people he “helps” are not in on the joke. The humor is amazing and every episode cracks me up. He really goes the extra mile and no expense is spared. I’ve rewatched this entire series dozens of times and I don’t regret it for a second.
