6 Things To Stop Doing To Your Makeup

6 Things to Stop Doing To Your Makeup ASAP // eyelinerwings&prettythings

We all know those makeup tips that tell you not to sleep with your makeup on or to clean your brushes. These tips apply to your actual makeup collection and things we all seriously need to stop doing. So, read on, and be prepared to make some beneficial changes to your beauty collection and routine!

1.) Hoarding it.

I am definitely guilty of this. When products are limited edition and you love them or it’s a product you use every day and it is on sale, THEN it’s okay to hoard. When it’s something you think you’ll like, something that isn’t even on sale or something you don’t go through often (ie: glitter eyeliner), think really carefully before you hoard. Hoarding takes up space and it can totally backfire if you find a product you like more or decide you don’t like it anymore.

2.) Storing it in poor conditions.

Here’s an important thing to note: storing your makeup in the bathroom is not the best idea. It gets humid from the hot and steamy showers, bathrooms are super germy and…just, try not to store make up in there if you can avoid it. Avoid storing your make up somewhere that gets a ton of constant sunlight (ie: right in front of your window or in your car) and stop leaving it in your purse. I found a melted lipstick in my purse today and I am kicking myself. Remove that day’s lip color from your purse at the end of each day to avoid a mess of melty and icky products. This also helps you avoid damaging your purse.

This also goes for storing it while travelling! One of the things to do before going on vacation should be to carefully pack your make up. Anything easily shattered, like compacts, should be wrapped in tissue. Products that can leak, like liquid foundation, should be in a ziploc bag.

3.) Using it while you’re sick without cleaning it after.

If you have any illness (especially a contagious one or eye-related one) try to refrain from using make up at all costs. If you must use make up, clean it very thoroughly! I always use makeup when I’m sick and have to go somewhere and while you’re definitely not supposed to do that, I find that it’s the best time to use it because it makes you go from zombie to normal in fifteen minutes. Wash your brushes after use while sick and don’t use eye products if you have pink eye. My biggest tip is to use a lip brush when using your lipstick and cleaning the brush after while also rubbing off the top layer of lipstick that you used the brush on. You can also be extra cautious and use a disinfecting makeup spray on your products.

4.) Giving up on it too soon.

I like to use most products at least 2-3 times before totally ruling them out. The only time I don’t use products multiple times before deciding I don’t want them is when they cause me to break out or the only thing I dislike are the color. Most mascaras and eyeliners deserve a few chances. Try to give things a chance before deciding they totally suck. No one likes being harshly judged based on first impressions…don’t subject your makeup to the same fate.

5.) Sharing it.

If those beauty horror stories about girls getting diseases that paralyze them from borrowing their friends’ make-up don’t scare you into being selfish with make up, I don’t know what will. I refuse to let anyone borrow my make up and if I use my things to do someone else’s make up, I make sure to thoroughly wash my brushes after AND disinfect my makeup with a special spray. This step might be ignored just like the rule about not sharing drinks usually is, but note that the one thing you should especially never share is mascara. Don’t do it!

6.) Keeping things you know you won’t use.

This wastes space and money. Most beauty products can be returned if you have the receipt and it isn’t past a certain date. I love returning mascaras I don’t like–it gives me the chance to try a different one instead. I also feel like I’m some kind of reality show judge eliminating contestants and bringing new ones on. It’s a nice power trip.

Being able to return mascara also makes doing best and worst mascara posts much easier. CVS has a great makeup return policy and I always take advantage. Return it if you can or give it away to someone else. If it doesn’t work for you, it may very well work for someone else. This is especially the case when the only issue is the product being the wrong shade. When concealers and foundations are too dark for me I usually give them to my mom.

Those are just a few makeup tips I have to share with you! What are some make up tips you have?

  1. I’m a huge germophobe when it comes to sharing my makeup, even my makeup brushes. I don’t know what would happen, but it just grosses me out! So I’m right there with ya!
