To me, there are few things greater than a bangin’ lipstick color and New York City. You know what’s better? Being able to make your own custom lipstick IN NYC with your best friend because she’s a great gift giver (and she read your post about cool things to do in NYC). Bless her for one of the coolest gifts ever.
So, in case you were curious about the Bite Beauty Lip Lab in SoHo or in case you’re just dying to know more about making custom lipstick and gallivanting around NYC, you’re in for a journey.
For starters, SoHo is an adorable little slice of NYC. Bite Beauty Lip Lab was situated between a few small shops and as soon as you step in, you know some magic’s about to happen. Little pots of pigment are lined up at each station along with mirrors.
After stepping in, I was instructed to remove my lip color (bye, bye!) and then we were given a yummy exfoliator and lip moisturizer. Heads up: don’t come here right before meeting someone for a date or something unless you plan on touching up. Your mouth and skin will likely get a bit red or lipstick-stained from taking off and trying on so many colors.
Indecisive on color like me? No worries. You can literally sit there for over an hour *cough* like the homie that was trying to make the perfect dark lipstick since before we walked in to even after we left and try to figure out what you like. You can choose your finish, which can be creamy, sheer, something I forgot and my one and only, Prince Charming himself, Matte. Seriously, matte finishes give me LIFE.
Might I mention that their matte lipstick is so moisturizing. Mind you, I’ve worn so many matte colors but none of them have ever been this creamy and smooth. Color me impressed. Then again, for a $45+ lipstick, I’m expecting good stuff.
I went in wanting the perfect berry color and ended up making up my mind and changing it while also having the lip tech mix a bunch of variations. It’s so interesting to watch them mix the colors, it looks like Cold Stone Creamery ice cream being made on a smaller, prettier scale. They mix the colors right in front of you, it’s amazing to watch.
The picture right above that looks vaguely like a crime scene is where my colors were mixed to test and view. As you can see, I had no idea what kind of berry I wanted.
After finally falling in love with a deep berry color (that looks really similar to my one true love, Nyx Soft Matte Lip Creme in Copenhagen) and after my friend decided on a stunning deep red, we chose scents/flavors for our beloved lipsticks.
They had various scents for you to sniff and even combine from mango to vanilla to cherry to citrus to wild berry. I ended up choosing vanilla while my friend chose cherry-vanilla. The finished product has the faintest smell and taste of it, it’s not overpowering.
We also got to choose the shape of the lipstick cap, which is pretty random and cool. The packaging is incredibly sleek and matte *swoon* and the lipsticks took about 10 minutes for her to mix, cook and freeze (or whatever the science is). We also got cards with the mix information just in case we ever want a refill.
Let me just say that this is the coolest gift ever–seriously, if you have any makeup lovers in your life who have a birthday coming up, a gift card to Bite Beauty Lip Lab is amazing. I will also say to definitely make an appointment in advance, though they do take walk-ins.
The lipstick itself is gorgeous and the packaging is very quality. I will say that it doesn’t last as well as some of my other lip colors, but it does fade evenly and to a nice pinkish stain. The formula is creamy and not drying, which is a blessing for matte colors everywhere. Here’s my lipstick info card in case you were wondering which pigments my lipstick is made of.
My mom’s first question was, “What did you name your color?” We didn’t get to officially name it, but I’ll call it what I like. Perhaps something punk like “Bitchin’ Berry” or “Bad Ass Berry” or “A Berry Lovely Shade” or”Berry Sick of Berry Puns.”
Here is the beloved Bitchin’ Berry/Berry Sick of Berry Puns lipstick on my lips.
Also, after I got home I realized my color is like a bunch of my favorites from home (oops). I’m not even mad–I love it and, truthfully, it’s not possible to create an entirely new color that’s never been seen before, you know?
Aside from being lipstick creators at Bite Beauty Lip Lab, we shopped around at Forever 21, American Eagle and the stores around. Also, I realized how horrible I am at navigating SoHo (but I did walk 13,00o steps, whooo, fitness!) because unlike Midtown, the streets lack convenient numbers.
Also, if you’re in the area and seeking food recommendations, Olive’s has amazing sandwiches. Their grilled chicken with chipotle mayo on focaccia bread was dreamy. The day ended with a raspberry macaron from Francois Payard Bakery. Raspberry macarons give me life. Seriously, my future wedding cake will not be a cake but a tower of raspberry macarons with edible glitter sprinkled on top. They’re freakin’ delicious.
So, yeah, I stand by my recommendation of Bite Beauty Lip Lab as a fun and unique thing to do in NYC. It was fun, it was unique and I got to make my own lip color ~squee~.
Bitchin’ Berry does resemble ‘Beetroot’! The shade you made looks great on you, but berries are not a shade I gravitate towards, heh. Personally, I really like that reddish shade at the top left of the mixing sheet–make that a bit darker and I’d be all over that!
The new Bite Lab in Toronto is definitely bigger than the one in NYC, and apparently ours will be the new flagship!
