There’s nothing quite as magical as New York City during the winter. Beautiful gray snow piles on every corner, puddles for days, the smell of cigarettes, aggressive people Christmas shopping…I mean…the beautiful lights and snow-covered trees and the smell of roasted nuts being sold on street corners!
All right, all right. There is something particularly wonderful about the city in the winter if you look past the surface. Here are some things to do in NYC this winter that’ll keep you out of the cold and keep you entertained!
1. Visit The Strand & Max Brenner’s.
This is quite possibly the perfect dream date whether it be with a friend, a parent or an S.O. Books and chocolate? Yes please! These two locations are located very close together so there’s minimal exposure to the chilly outdoors and they’re a perfect combo. You can spend hours walking around the miles of used, new and old books in The Strand’s cozy building and then head over for chocolate fondue and hot cocoa at Max Brenner’s. Even if you choose to just visit The Strand and eat somewhere else, it’s still going to be a great time. My dad used to take me to The Strand and then to get burgers–you can’t go wrong with books and burgers.
2. Go ice skating.
No, I’m not saying go ice skating at the over-famous and overpriced Rockefeller Center. That’s most likely going to end up with you stuck in a crowded tourist trap. There are a handful of ice skating rinks throughout NYC. Try to visit other ice skating parks and rinks in New York, such as The Rink at Bryant Park. Ice skating and then grabbing hot chocolate or coffee would be a perfect day in New York.
3. Go museum hopping.
This is surprisingly not too expensive–many museums allow you to pay what you want or have a set price you can check online. There are so many freaking museums in NYC from museums of art to museums of history to even museums of sex. You can stay classic with The MoMA or get a little crazy with the Museum of Sex. Seriously, google “*insert word of choice* museum NYC” and you’re almost guaranteed to find something cool. This is a great way to feel ~cultured~ and keep on learning, even while school isn’t in session.
4. See a Broadway show.
Yeah, this is an obvious choice, but you cannot go wrong! You’ll stay warm indoors and be greatly entertained for a few hours. There’s a Broadway show for everyone and there are a lot of ways to get great deals on tickets. Dinner and a Broadway show is a timeless little New York tradition that’d be perfect for any group.
5. Visit a flea market.
There are a ton of flea markets in NYC, some are outdoors (like the Union Square Holiday Market) but many are indoors for those who can’t stand the cold. These are sure to bring you entertainment and you’ll be able to find new treasures.
6. Check out a comedy club.
Comedy clubs are sprinkled throughout New York City and they’re a great indoor getaway. The Comedy Cellar has had a lot of performances by famous comedians and people from Comedy Central. Seriously, what’s better than going somewhere where the purpose is to laugh?
