So long are the days of wearing the same outfit as often as possible. We’ve all been there, we all have our go to outfit formulas that laundry makes possible to perpetuate ad infinitum. It’s time to escape the style rut and refresh your style.
Say no more to style envy and washing the same pair of leggings and shirts over and over. These simple tips will help you strengthen and refresh your style in no time.
1. Have your best friend/S.O./sister be your stylist.
Let them pick your outfit for a day or for a week. I proposed this to my roommate and she was super excited to get to play Rachel Zoe for a week. I gave her full range of my closet, makeup and hair styling tools to see what she came up with. It’s a way to try something new without totally going out of your comfort zone. It’s also a new way to breathe life into your wardrobe without spending any money, yay!
2. Host a clothing & accessory swap.
You can turn this into a fun little party! Have your friends and maybe even friends of friends all gather together with some articles of clothing and accessories that they no longer have a place for in their closet. You’ll probably end up finding some great new pieces while also making space for them by trading pieces you no longer want. If you want to turn it into a party, some activities can include DIY shirts or accessories…who doesn’t love a good DIY?
3. Actually use your Pinterest board.
My Pinterest fashion board is everything I aspire to be style-wise, but the truth is I don’t own a lot of the pieces in the pins and the ones I do own, I never actually use to complete the pinned looks. Use your pins! Print out some of your favorite Pinterest outfits and recreate them using your wardrobe (or a shopping spree).
4. Go shopping with someone new.
If you always go shopping with the same person, why not take someone else on a trip to the mall with you? You might end up in different stores or being encouraged to try on things you normally wouldn’t consider trying. If you use some money saving shopping tips, you’ll get more bang for your buck and be able to stock up on more staple pieces. Score!
5. Clean out your wardrobe.
Does anyone else constantly forget about shoes or clothing they have in their closet? Finding these things is an amazing feeling, it’s like getting a new gift. Toss the old and wear the forgotten. If it helps, move your most-worn pieces to the back of your wardrobe and bring the never worn or hardly worn pieces to the front.
6. Take a day to pre-plan some outfits.
Enlist someone to play photographer or do some flat-lays to photograph and save these outfits on your phone. This is perfect for when you’re in a rush or can’t decide on what to wear. If you’re less classy and efficient, you can do what I’ve done and write down the outfit and accessories combo you wore onto a post-it and stick it to your closet just in case you want to remember the recipe to a great outfit. Smooooth.
7. Identify your style pros and woes.
Do you love your minimalist style but hate that you never incorporate color? Do you wish you wore less T-shirts? Identify the things you love and want to change about your style and identify how to change it. If, for example, you want to incorporate more color into your wardrobe, set a goal to have one colorful piece in your outfit for an entire week. If you want to wear less T-shirts, put them in the back of your drawers and move sweaters and button-downs to the front.
8. Make a style board.
You know how mood boards became a huge thing? Well, there’s a reason. While your mood board probably has some style elements on it, create a new board that focuses on your style. Put colors, outfits, designers and styles you like onto a board and hang it near your closet. It’ll help inspire you and remind you what your favorite fashions are.
